FOSTERING HEALTHY WORKSPACES A few weeks ago, whilst interviewing several candidates for a position that had opened up in our team, the issue of a healthy working environment popped up in each interview as one of the top considerations for candidates, some of whom boldly asked whether this is something they could expect at Red Couch. When probed about what they consider to constitute a healthy working environment, a number of candidates mentioned an "anxiety-free" workplace, a nurturing environment with patient supervisors, and some flexibility in working conditions as may be needed to support a sustainable work-life balance. These type of discussions were not commonplace decades ago, more so within the context of limited job opportunities. We were impressed by the candidates' clarity and courage to articulate the working environment that they believe will help them thrive. Indeed unhealthy environments with unsustainable demands have been needlessly endured for far too long and in this sense, the new generation of the workforce is right in pushing for workspaces to be conducive to growth and success. This does not negate the fact that when we come in to the office, we sign up to work, not to play or to coast along and still expect a decent paycheck. Work must still be done and done right, and that requires time and effort as we continue to find ways of working smarter.
